To access a copy of Windows Server Standard or Datacenter edition it is necessary to have Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Remote Desktop Services for each user or device. Under the licensing model for Windows Server 2022 Standard and Datacenter Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required. If you have a Device CAL you will need to purchase a CAL for every device that accesses your server of the number of users who use that device to access the server. Whenever a user or device accesses Windows Server directly or indirectly a Windows Server CAL is necessary. In addition users who require access to programs or the entire desktop via Remote Desktop Services must also have a Remote Desktop Service (RDS) CAL. For desktop access both the Windows Server CAL (user or device) and the RDS CAL (user or device) are needed. The RDS CALs come with an activation product key. However there is an exception where up to two individuals or devices can access the server software without needing an RDS CAL or a Windows Server CAL long as it is solely, for server administrative purposes.
